British Columbia rewards heating companies that treat the coast and the Interior as separate markets. A branch in the Lower Mainland or on Vancouver Island sells into mild, damp winters and a growing heat-pump market. A branch in the Okanagan, Kamloops or Prince George sells into a longer, colder season. One company, one brand, but at least two seasonal calendars.
The BC market for multi-branch heating firms
Most multi-branch heating companies in BC grow along the Lower Mainland first, from Vancouver and Burnaby out to Surrey, Coquitlam and Abbotsford, then add a branch on the Island or in the Okanagan. Each step changes the marketing.
- Lower Mainland branches often overlap. Burnaby and Coquitlam sit close enough that two branches can end up chasing the same searches. Draw service areas from drive times and give each municipality to one branch.
- Vancouver Island behaves as its own market, separated by ferry. A branch there needs its own team, profile and page, not a line on the Vancouver page.
- Interior branches such as Kelowna serve wide areas. Keep service areas within realistic drive times rather than stretching a profile across a region.
Climate and seasonality
Around Vancouver and Victoria, winters stay mild and rainy; inland and up north, the cold arrives earlier, bites harder and lasts longer. That difference shapes each branch's marketing year.
What it means in practice:
- Coastal branches see demand spread more evenly, with heat pumps and cooling extending the season into summer.
- Interior and northern branches see a sharper autumn rush and a longer peak.
- A company-wide budget calendar will under-fund one side and over-fund the other. Set each branch's monthly targets from its own history, as our budget guide explains.
Statistics Canada puts natural gas at 42% of BC households' primary heating energy in 2023, with electricity close behind at 36%. For marketing, that means a sizeable gas-service base and a large electric one, with heat pumps relevant to both.
Regulators to know
We link these bodies so you can go to the source. We summarise only, and we give no compliance advice.
- Technical Safety BC licenses gas and electrical contractors and oversees technical systems including gas and boilers.
- WorkSafeBC is the workers' compensation board for staff at every BC branch.
- BC Registries and Online Services handles business registration, relevant if you are entering BC from another province.
For marketing, the practical point is that each branch's advertising should only describe licensed work that branch's company actually holds the licence for.
Programs that affect demand
BC's provincial programs change often, and branches must describe them the same way. As of October 2026, the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program offers heat pump and insulation rebates for lower-income households, supported by BC Hydro and FortisBC. Eligibility depends on household income and the rules are revised from time to time, so campaign copy written last season may no longer be accurate.
For a multi-branch company, this is a standards problem. If one branch still runs last year's rebate wording, the whole brand looks careless. Put approved program wording in your branch standard with a review date, and confirm details with the administrator before each campaign.
How we'd approach a BC branch network
Our usual order for a company with branches in BC:
- Map every branch's real service area by drive time and fix overlaps in the Lower Mainland.
- Give each branch a tracked local number and route after-hours calls by branch, using our call routing service.
- Build a genuine page and profile for each branch, with Island and Interior pages written about local conditions.
- Set separate seasonal budget calendars for coastal and Interior branches.
Our GasBoilers.ca work, a gas-boiler division built for CANRO Heat serving 26+ BC communities, is the closest example of running a distinct line of business across many BC communities. More on the results page.
We are a Vancouver-based marketing and business consulting service, not a heating contractor. See all regions on the areas page.
Frequently asked questions
Should a Vancouver branch and a Kelowna branch run the same ads?
Same brand and offer rules, different timing and content. The Interior's heating season is longer and colder, so its peak budget months usually start earlier and last longer than the coast's.
Who regulates gas work in BC?
Technical Safety BC licenses gas and electrical contractors in the province. Check its site for what applies to each branch; we don't give compliance advice.
Can our branches promote CleanBC rebates?
Yes, if they describe them accurately and current as of the date. The Energy Savings Program is for lower-income households and its rules get revised, so confirm details on Better Homes BC before each campaign.
